In 2000 Winona read a part of "The Vagina Monologues" by Eve Ensler.

It was a special award-winning Off-Broadway presentation held on V-Day / Violence Against Women Day as a counter-day to Valentine's Day. This counter-day should make aware of all the crimes and violence from men against women.

The play consists of Interviews Eve Ensler made with many women about their vagina – some off them were read not only by Winona but also by Susan Sarandon, Glenn Close, Calista Flockhart, Melanie Griffith, Marisa Tormei and Kate Winslet.

The topic of the Monologues is extreme – but it's raising public attention. If they would silently gather to protest against violence against women – no one would recognize it.

The Monologues are polarizing – and IMO they are written to do so. Here's an article by Christina Hoff Sommers, a women activist who really don't like them.

IMHO the reality lies somewhere between Ensler and Hoff Sommers – not all men are rapists – but violence against women exists. Privately in families or by religious leaders who are surpressing women rights on a statewide scale.

But Hoff Sommers made one good point – Eve Ensler shouldn't have interviewed children about their vaginas...

The 2000 presentation however was well done – one of the Monologues was read by Winona Ryder and Brittany Murphy. A fan made this video (DivX format) with her/his video-camera.

Plus: Read an article from ABC News about 1998 V-Day...

My opinion: If you call it V-Day – Violence Against Women Day or Valentines Day. For me it's basically all the same.

You should regard the "other" sex with the same respect like you regard yourself – not only on this particular day – but every day!

Don't do violence – not against the "other" sex, not against the "same" sex and not against children – not only on this particular day – but every day!

This what I'd suggest for men at V(alentines)-Day: Get a present she would like. Go with her to a candle-light dinner. And then read some Monologues with her and remember that not everyone is playing by the above rules.

And I think most women won't like Bob – but I'm a man – so I could be wrong...(-;
