Winona's infamous shoplifting trial
it was the worst of times
In 2002 Winona's career came to a sudden halt - she was accused of shoplifting at Saks, she should have stolen goods worth $5000 - $15000 (depending on the source).
After that a showtrial commenced in Los Angeles.
In 2002 and the years after I couldn't watch those pics and tv newsfeeds. Two feelings were fighting within me....
- emotion: I don't want to believe she did this. How could such a great person do a thing like this, it seemed rediculous.
- logic: deep inside me logic tortured me with "admit it, she really did this.
At times this inner turmoil brought me to tears...
Today I don't want to get into legal details, just three aspects for your consideration:
1. It was stated that Winona did this while under the influence of drugs or medication - as this influence limits your ability to reason in europe such influence is counted in favor of the accused...
2. Around the same time one of those gangsta rappers clobbered two of his fans into hospital and got away with a $500 fine...
3. The charges about drug-abuse, vandalism and resistance against the police were pure fantasy and had to be dropped...
Nevertheless Winona stood through the trial, without any crying like some other celeb does today.
And she still looked amazing...

During the trial many stations aired short documentaries about Winona's career – mostly talking bullshit – but if you turned down the volume you could watch more beauty on screen then ever before.
In the first one or two years after the trial a flock of papparazi followed Winona every time she went shopping – you can easily guess for what they were waiting. But Winona smiled and soldiered though it...
As I've stressed several times before papparazi pictures are ambivalent to me - on the one hand I love to see every new picture of Winona - on the other I can understand that she's pestered by them. As we in germany say a "Teufelskreis" (a Devil's Circle - when action A leads to action B which leads again to action A) - so I mainly choose pictures that at least show Winona in a beautiful and positive way.
