The Story
Charlotte meets at the funeral of her brother the shy poet Evan, who tells her he had known her brother in College. Charlotte starts a sweaty affair with Evan, but didn't know that he isn't writing that kind of poetry that Charlotte is thinking about. Evan tries to evade her questions, slowly building a more and more dense network of lies – in which lies the beginning of the end.
My Opinion
Sold as a comedy this truely is a sensible drama with some quirks of wonderful black humor. Avoiding the typical Hollywood clichés the affair between the unlikely pair – Charlotte and Evan – starts out like a Midsummer's Night Dream. But as any dream must end their affair ends with mutual disappointment, and as the movie avoids the cheesy sobbing and „man-running-after-the-woman“ the end is open – but no happy end.
I quite like Evan's character – knowing from myself beeing rather quiet I know how difficult it is to attract women – and even if attracting one not to screw it. Winona also gives a vivid performance, being the lively opposite to the quiet Evan – who in the end keeps the door for Evan open. Also great: Ray Romano – adding a sense of dark comedy as one of Evan's weird clients.
