My fav scenes from Girl....Interrupted
and some additional information...
The Beginning:
The beginning of a movie is a very delicate time...
On GI the first scenes really set the mood and atmosphere of the whole movies. The melancholy swell with the theme from Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel.
Time it was and what a time it was it was,
A time of innocence a time of confidences.
Long ago it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you
Also the introduction narrated by Noni set the mood for the picture to come. You instantly began to care for Susanna.
Have you ever confused a dream with life? Or stolen something when you had the cash? Have you ever been blue? Or thought your train moving while sitting still? Maybe I was just crazy, maybe it was the 60's, or maybe I was just a Girl....Interrupted.
Today the second sentence is even more sad...
After that came a really disturbing scene, where Susanna is in hospital after her suicide attempt and the medics try to get the Aspirin and the Vodka out of her...
During Susanna's first days in the hospital she's still frightened by the other girls sometimes weird behaviour but she's starting to warm up on them...
The Flashbacks:
During the whole movie Susanna has flashbacks on her life before she got into Claymore. You can see that Susanna was indeed a little weird but IMO that wouldn't got her into Claymore...
But you can also see how Susanna get into her suicide attempt. Unfortunately nearly 15 Minutes of flashbacks were cut from the final version of the movie and you can see them in the Cut Scenes section of the DVD. They give further insight into Susannas character.
In the end you realize...the whole movie was a flashback...
The Nightly Activities:
While at Claymore the inhabitants take some time off at night.
They're playing some bowling and break into the doctor's office and read their medical records. These are lighter scenes but you can also see how Susanna befriends to the other girls...
While at the doctor's office Susanna learns about her disease from a book...( borderline.mp3)
Singing Downtown:
After Polly breaks down, Susanna and Lisa are picking the lock of the musical instruments locker in the art room and singing Petula Clarke's Downtown ( gi.mp3) for Polly....
But after picking the lock and sleeping on the corridor the trouble begins...and Susanna's condition is beginning to take a turn for the worse...
In Dr. Wick's Office:
After helping Polly Susanna has to report to Dr. Sonia Wick...and Susanna is very rebellious...( drwick.mp3)
The Bath Scene:
IMO Winona has her best scenes in GI with Whoopi Goldberg alias ward nurse Valerie. In the scenes they play together, Noni and Whoopi perform at their best...
After returned from Dr. Wick Susanna is down. At first because Dr. Wick observed that her progress has nearly stopped...and because Lisa was transferred to another ward...
Valerie tries to lighten up Susanna, but she is very unfriendly...so Valerie picks her up throws her into a cold bath...
Susanna gets really furious and insults Valerie hard...( bath.mp3)
After this scene you think Susanna's situation can't get worse...but then she ran away with Lisa...
The Runaway
During the runaway Susanna's situation is again beginning to turn...and she after the suicide of Daisy she sees how cold Lisa really is...
Seeing death... really seeing it, makes dreaming about it fucking ridiculous.
Back in Claymore:
Another wonderful scene together with Whoopi...
Susanna is really down after Daisy's death...Valerie comforts Susanna warmhearted...and Susanna understands what happens if you let your flaws take over...
The End:
While beeing the last night at Claymore Susanna is threatened by Lisa...
Crazy isn't being broken or swallowing a dark secret. It's you or me amplified. If you ever told a lie and enjoyed it, if you ever wished you could be a child forever. They were not perfect, but they were my friends. And by the 70's most of them were out, living lives. Some I've seen, some never again, but there isn't been a day my heart doesn't find them.
The Notebook
During the whole movie you can see Susanna writing her diary what will years later become a bestseller...
The movie signs of with the classic Downtown performed by Petula Clark.
After seeing GI I'm always somewhat stunned for the rest of the day...
