The Story:
Young businessman Jonathan Harker travels to the carpates to sell some property in London to the weird and mysterious Dracula. As Dracula sees a picture of Jonathan's girlfriend Mina Murray he sees in her his long-dead wife Elisabeta. He traps Jonathan in his castle and travels to London...
As Dracula begins a romantic relationship with Mina, who is strangely attracted to him, weird things begin to happen in London. Only Professor van Helsing knows whats going on and begins to fight Dracula and tries to save Mina...
My Opinion:
A good adaption of Bram Stoker's work. The movie didn't focus on the special effects (which are well done) but on the characters. In the tradition of great vampire movies like the legendary Nosferatu.
Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder perform splendidly and you can feel the fatal attraction between their characters...

Behind the Scenes Interview:
Winona read my
script and asked Francis for his reaction to the script. She was
interested in the role of Mina, and valued his opinion. Coppola's
opinion was that Winona absolutely should play Jonathan Harker's
bride-to-be, and the object of Dracula's long-lost love. And by the
way, could he direct the film?
Jim Hart about
his screenplay for Dracula
She opened a lot of
doors inside me that I didn't know existed. I had always gone on my
instinct, but for this you couldn't phone in anything. Even when it's
a reaction shot or if it's one word or if You're walking down the
street you have to be completely in character.
Noni
about playing Mina
Altough she looks
like a "child-woman", with perfect pale skin and jet hair,
her self-possession is awesome.
Richard E.
Grant about his first meeting with Winona
I always try to
disrupt the actor Try it this way, try it that way. The more
I do it to them, the more I'm enabling them to enrich themselves, so
when they do it it's going to be really truthful It gets
pretty crazy, but they like that.
Francis Ford
Coppola about abusing actors on set
Winona Ryder
appears wearing a forties flower-print dress, sporting her minute
eighteen-inch waist, and looking like "Snow White".
Richard
E. Grant about the first rehearsels
His methods didn't
work on me. I don't cry I just glare. And certainly didn't
appreciate it.
Winona about Coppola's methods
Winona
Ryder in those days was going out with Johnny Depp, and I wanted
Johnny to have the part [of Jonathan Harker]. The studio thought he
wasn't enough of a star. So I said to Winona, What dou you
think? Who do you think they would think is a star, who would want to
do it? And she said Keanu.
Francis Ford
Coppola about casting Keanu Reeves
Sadie
[Frost], having started off shy, is yakking ten to the dozen and she
and Winona are clickety-click.
Richard E.
Grant about Sadie and Winona
You
know, watching Tom Waits sing Waltzing Matilda to
Winona at the piano, Winona crying. It was a beautiful life.
Keanu
Reeves about filming Dracula
