The Day My God Died“ premiered on the TriBeCa Film Festival 2003 in New York, hosted among others by Robert DeNiro. Here's the press release:

The Day My God Died," an independent documentary feature film narrated by Tim Robbins and Winona Ryder and co-produced by Ryder, which will be featured during this week's Tribeca Film Festival in New York, was edited in its entirety by students and instructors of Video Symphony, Hollywood's leading TV, Film and DVD Education Center, according to Mike Flanagan, President, Video Symphony.

Shot on location in Nepal and India, "The Day My God Died" is a revealing look by filmmaker/director Andrew Levine at the child sex slave trade in those lands, originally investigated by the late American journalist Robert I. Friedman, who wrote about his experiences in The Nation in l996. Levine returned to the same brothers originally explored by Friedman, and documented the living conditions of young women sold there into the child sex slave trade. The documentary retraces the experiences of five young girls who have escaped from what has become the fastest growing black market in the world, while also exploring the questions that young girls have as they prepare to die of AIDS. The documentary will be featured during the Tribeca Film Festival on May 8 and again on May 11th.

Instructor Tamera Daugherty was the liaison between "The Day My God Died" and Video Symphony. She and her students there, courtesy of equipment and services partically donated by Video Symphony, provided all of the online editing (on an Avid Symphony system) for the film itself, with the sound design, sound editing, and final mixing performed on ProTools systems. Video Symphony's students also designed and created all graphics and animations for this film, including titles, as well as the print graphic design imagery that appears on the theatrical poster, and will later appear on the film's DVD cover.

Regarding this project, Mr. Flanagan said, "'The Day My God Died' is an extraordinary film depicting a horrific subject matter. We at Video Symphony were honored to be involved in the editorial and post production services for this special film, which is certainly worthy of significant attention. Our of our goals in donating some of our services to this film was to spread the word to the independent feature film community that our students are eagerly seeking quality projects to edit and provide various other post production services to. These filmmakers of tomorrow, working with tight deadlines and even tighter budgets, should keep Video Symphony in mind as an invaluable resource for their productions, large and small.“

As far as I've heard about this project, a great beginning for Winona after her legal troubles!
