BOYS – an alternate storyline
Boys is the weakest movie Winona ever made. After giving it some thougt I've decided to write my own - hopefully better version of BOYS. However I'm not a writer, even if I've written around half a dozen Star Trek novels - you can read two of them at on Star Trek section of this website.
I've removed the whole school and kids stuff from the story. In my opinion all the school buy stuff is distracting the audience from the real story - the love between young man and a mysterious woman.
I've kept the basic idea - but turned it into a road-movie. This has the major advantage that the story can focus on the two main characters.
And one other thing: I've kept the flashbacks – but not normally played pieces like in the original movie. You've got to imagine them like a nightmare – vision is unclear – you only understand fragments of words...more like the nightmares poeple have in Twin Peaks...
Any objections, comments or ideas to further improve the story are welcome...

In the morning. Patty's head is aching. It must have been a wild night – but she can't really remember. Suddenly someone is knocking on the door... |

Patty is opening the door. The police???
What can I do for you, Officer?
The officer is telling her that she is suspected of having killed a sport star and that she is arrested for further interrogation... |
Patty is shocked. She really can't remember what happened the last night. But what if he is right, Patty is thinking, maybe I can't remember because I've a shock. But it can't be true, I'm not a killer.... |
On the police station... John Baker has been taken to the police because he ran away from his far too ambitious and stuborn father. He don't want to live the life his father has in mind for him. The door of a room opens and he's seeing a joung and mysterious woman...who is obviously in trouble... |
Their eyes met... |
At the elevator... John has to listen to his father's sermon over and over again... |
Patty is listening to the ofensive speech of her lawyer... From one second to the other they both now what to do... |
Both are jumping into the elevator as the doors are closing. |
Wanna get away from this? Jon asks. Yes, sure. She knew this is crazy. But I can't get into jail for what I don't know... |
John is taking the car of his father and they're heading off the police station grounds. They're going north... |
The night is setting and John is trying to know more about Patty... They've seldom talked during the first hours of their trip... |

Patty is telling about herself, that she
always was the "cute'n'hot girl" for a night. But she don't want to be
this anymore. John asks why she was catched by the police. She said that
they think she's involved in a murder, but they have no proof.
Did you murdered anyone?, John asks.
Patty is thinking...
Only fragments are coming to her mind:...a bar or club...a man...but nothing clear. Her head is beginning to ache and everything starts spinning. Her body shakes I really can't remember. Patty has gone white. Are you alright?, John asks. Sure, Patty answered, but can we stop at the next truck-stop? I need to go where girls are going... She's laughing insecure... |
They're entering a small town in the middle of nowwhere. And John pulls over at the next truck stop. The womens facilities are closed, so John has to guard the mens facilities... |
Patty is refreshing herself. More fragments of memory struck her. She's is locking her hands to the edges of the washbasin... |
the bar again... |
a man...she knows him...a big sports star maybe... And then the memories vanish again, as fast as they've come... |
Patty feels sudden pain. I'm injured. She's lifting her shirt and she sees that she's bruised at her pelvis... |
And also her head aches again...and she's discovering a bloody cut under her hair What the hell has happened to me...? |
A vivid memory struck her: A car is breaking out of control...heading down to a lake... |
Patty is trembling. She has the strange sensation that she was in this car. She could still see the fast closing-in water. Her body was termbling again. She was trying to hold herself on the board. But the old wood couldn't stand it and it broke in pieces. John was hearing that from the outside and rushed in... |
Is everything alright?, John asks. No, there was an car accident, and I was involved, Patty answered, but I can't remember how or why... John sees that she's trembling all over... |
Shhhh, it will all be alright, says John and is lying his arms around her... And Patty relaxes... |

Patty doesn't know why, but she feels
save with John.
He's so young, Patty is thinking, but I never felt this secure with a man before...
You've made a little mess, John says, we should go before the owner comes.
Good idea.
They're leaving the truck-stop...
I get us to a motel, John says and smiles at her, you've got to rest...
At the motel Patty fell asleep fast but the nightmares came back... |
a bar...a boy...somewhat familiar...famous... |
She's sitting in a car that is crashing into a lake... Patty awakes... |
Patty's sweeting all over because of the nightmare. She's trying to cool herself... John has awaken... |
Is everything okay? Just a nightmare...I was in a car that crashed into a lake. Who was driving? I don't know. How did you got out?... |
Another memory struck her mind... She was returning home... All wet... |
And she went to bed... |
I really don't know, John Hey, you really got a bump on your head. I know. Did you know how that happens? No, it's just vanishing...I try, but I can't remember...Do you believe me? |
Sure, you will remember soon... And Patty believes him without hesitation... |
John is taking her hand...she feels as if her worries are flowing off her hand into him... She's lying down in bed... Please John, hold me for a while...just for a while... John is wrapping his arms around her...and she fells asleep... Patty slept without any more nightmares... His hands a going through her hair What are your secrets, my mysterious beauty?, John whispers... And he felt real love...for the first time in his life... |
Early in the morning they leave the motel and hit the road again... Heading up north... |
The day is blazing with sunshine, everything is green because of last weeks rain Patty has sleept well the rest of the night... |
You really don't want to know.
C'mon, couldn't be worse than me...
Okay, but I warned you...my father got me on this boring elite school...Do you know, he has some restaurants. And he want's me to make his company a big wall-street business...I think it's bullshit...I want to travel...maybe writing books about my travels.
What does you father think about that?
He says these are idiotic dreams...so I ran away
Twice? Patty asks smiling
Yeah, you're right...
Are you a ladies man at school
Not really...it's a boys school...how did you come to that?
Just wondering, answered Patty and looks smiling out of the window...
The rest of the day is flying past, like the landscape and little cities and villages outside. Laughing about bad drivers, running red-lights at empty street-crossings, philosphize over the stangeness of cow-tipping... Do you like nature?, Patty asks Yes, John answered, it's silent and peaceful. Great to think about things. Some day you should visit me. I've got two horses. Do you like to ride? I've never tried... In the afternoon they hear a search-call for them on the radio... So we can't take another motel, John says. Why not sleeping here? Where? Here!, Patty points to a wide green field, It's warm and dry... Okay, John says surprised, Why not... |
John leaves the road and the car bumps through the field. After a few seconds the road was out of reach... The evening fell over the country... |
They're still sitting in the car...silent... What to do next?, John asks. Oh, I've some ideas... |
He's such a gentlemen...helped me without hesitating...never said a wrong word...never felt that secure with a man before...no matter how young he is...
She's looking like an angel in the twilight...so beautiful...her magnetic eyes...with so much energy behind them...
They open the car doors and lay down in the warm grass...
No more words were necessary... They loved each other...it was slow and intense...very personal... |
John was still lying down...he had never felt love like this before... Patty was looking down at him...she was completely at ease...for the first time since that morning were she woke up with the damn headache... And I would never forget him... |
How do you feel?, Patty asks Wonderful...and you? I'm feeling better than ever...like if a shadow has disapeared and I can see clearly now... And suddenly she could remember everything... |
She was on the parking-lot of the bar...with the sport-star...he was very drunk... |
The sport-star short-circuited the car...they head of... |
He drove like a maniac...he didn't listen... |
He lost control of the car...they crashed in the lake and the car drowned fast At the impact I bumped my head hard. Water was comming in... |
Water has filled the car...I fought for my life to get out...thank god the door opened... I tried to get out, but something was holding me...I looked back...the sport-star hold my foot... |
I was in terror...I kicked him...he lost conciousness...I finally got out of the car My pelvis was scratched at the door... |
The surface...finally air... In shock I went home...and to bed... |

Is something wrong?, John asks.
No,...I remember now...everything...
Not far behind them a ferris wheel lit up.
Must be a festival, John speculated, should I get us something to drink?
Sounds great.
Patty looked after him. Why did I remember now?...Was it the love...that I felt so secure with him...? When John returned Patty has already fallen asleep... |
Early the next morning Patty woke up...John already sat in the car...the engine running. Patty got slowly into the car. Why the hurry? There was a lot of police at the festival... Did they search for us? - I don't know... Then calm down...maybe they expected a motorbike gang...not uncommon... Patty was lying her hands on his shoulders...he was relaxing...and John was looking deep into her eyes... How did you do this?, he asks smiling. Long experience...but you're good at it, too... They shared a long intimate kiss...and then they drove on... |
Early in the morning they stopped at a diner in a small town...it was empty except for them. I'm going back..., Patty began. |
I remember now everything...thanks to you. To me...??? You made me relax, I never felt that at ease as this days with you...never... Patty told him what he could remember now. I've got to clear things out with the police...and you should do the same with your father... |
You're right...as always. John was somewhat sad...it were wonderful days...he was missing Patty...even now... Will I see you again? |
Hey...don't look like this...I'll never forget you, John...and remember...I've promised you to show you how to ride a horse...will be great fun... John was lighten up a little. And I've never felt so close to man... Patty stood up and gently kissed his forehaed...he looked into her eyes...and saw that she felt the same for him as he does for her... I'll call you as soon as I can... Patty left the diner...John watched her as she enters a taxi... |
Seven days later...John was at home again...and he has cleared things with his father, he's still is a little grumpy...but John felt that he's also proud that his son stood up for things he wanted... The phone rang...Patty was on the line... How are you?, John asked, Is everything okay? Very fine...I told the police were to find the car wreck with the dead body in it...the evidence is supporting my story...How are you? Fine also...except...I'm missing you... Me too...but we can't met for a while... Why not...? I was sentecned for having a relationship with a boy who is not of legal age...funny isn't it? Why...Why don't they call me as a witness...I'd have relieved you... They don't want to embarass you further... They both laugh for a short moment... And what's the sentence?, John asked. I'm not allowed to approach you nearer than 100 metres... John could hear Patty breathing hard, as if she's avoiding tears But that's really hard...I really like to feel you again, John... Me too, Patty, me too...but we still can mail and phone...and only fourteen month to go...so your horses will have some time to prepare for me... She laughed again...John is taking her phone number and adress... |
THE END
