The Story:
The Maitlands have died in an car accident (they've died in a Vovlo - so how realistic is this???). What they at first doesn't recognize is that they're really dead – they face it as they can't leave the house and they find the "Handbook for the Recently Deceased".
The Deitz family from NYC buys the Maitland house: the hyperactive Delia Deitz, the "10 minutes - and I'm already at ease" Charles Deitz and their creepy daughter Lydia Deitz.
The Maitlands try get the Deitz out of their house - but they're not very good ghosts. They befriend Lydia who is the only one who can see them. In order to get the Deitz out of their house they call Beetlegeuse - the bio-excorcist...but with him the problems are really starting...
My Opinion:
A great fantasy movie by Tim Burton, which still lacks the magic of later films to come (like Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish), but still one of the best movies of 1988...
Best performances by Michael Keaton as Beetlegeuse - IMO the best he did until now.
And Winona as Lydia - who gave an outstanding performance as the creepy little kid, the international breakthrough for her.
Quotes:
I
asked Winona because I had seen her in Lucas, and she had a really
strong presence. But I'd heard she didn't want to do it because of
the satanic thing. I thought she must be a religious person or
something, but then I found out that it wasn't true because when I
met her she wanted to do it, and she was great.
Tim
Burton about Winona
I
was in my all-black phase. I had this really gloomy look. In a way,
we looked almost alike, we had the same tousled black hair, and we
were both dressed primarily in black.
Winona
about Lydia
The
most intelligent comic portrayal, much creepier than the ghosts
themselves.
