The Story:
Roderick Blank recieves an e-mail with the names of the 101 women he had and will ever fuck with. He sets out to complete his task. Meanwhile the mysterious woman Death Nell seduces men and puts them into comas...
My Opinion:
Sex and Death has some interesting ideas and scenes and features some funny acting by Winona, but even while a clearly better movie than Boys or Deeds I would put this only slightly above Darwin Awards and well below Winona's comedy highlights like Heathers or Mermaids. This is mainly due to two points:
1) Even if the story has some intersting ideas and heather-esque scenes (especially the dream and flashback scenes) the story is quite confusing at first: Why is this machine sending the e-mails and what has Death Nell / Gillian De Raisx to do with it? Why does Roderick screws his life because of an e-mail? Why is Death Nell putting men into comas? The first two are never truely answered during the movie.
2) The quality of the supporting cast varies heavily with hightlights from Frances Fisher (who played Winona's mom in Welcome Home, Roxy and still looks amazing for her age) and the guy who normally plays the janitor on Scrubs, but also some quite bleak performances by some of the female actresses who Roderick fucks.
Additionally I've to say that the city set they used looked a little like the Main Street from Disneyland...
Winona has some funny and hillarious scenes, even if she's only is in about one fifth of the movie and she also wears some super-hot dresses.
Lately I watched the Making Of Heathers and Michael Lehmann remarked that the original Heathers skript was three hours long. He together with Denise DiNovi rewrote it to make it shorter and crisper. And I think of that kind of a rewrite this movie would've greate benefitted.
